Barley news EU & UK: 2023 barley crop forecast increased to 59.57 mln tonnes

Warm weather conditions are still prevailing across most of Europe, which remains very favourable for winter crop development, RMI Analytics said in their latest report.

Turning the focus on spring barley planting, the drier than normal conditions should be watched closely, the analysts said. An improvement in moisture conditions is necessary, but there is plenty of time (for now).

RMI Analytics’ barley production forecast for crop 2023 at 59.57 mln tonnes for the EU27+UK is slightly higher (0.3 mln tonnes) than the previous forecast. The analysts still expect a small increase in 2023 production, however, competition for planted area will remain intense in most areas, and suitable water is required to attain similar yields and malting quality as experienced from crop 2022.

The European barley supply situation is ‘comfortable’ and the development of crop 2023 winter barley remains favourable. This sets us on a positive trajectory at the moment.
